日語量詞入門:不用背500個詞也能數清萬物

N5N4

Ask a Japanese learner what made them groan the first time they saw it, and counters will be on the list. In English you can say "three pencils" and "three dogs" with the same word, three. In Japanese, the number changes depending on what is being counted: 鉛筆を三本, 犬を三匹, 本を三冊.

The list of counters in the language is enormous, but you do not need all of it. For the JLPT N5 and N4, a small core covers nearly every question, and the rest can be picked up by exposure.

How a counter sentence works

The basic pattern is: object + を/が + number + counter + verb.

  • りんごを三つ買いました。— I bought three apples.
  • 友達が二人来ました。— Two friends came.
  • 紙を五枚ください。— Please give me five sheets of paper.

Unlike English, the number goes after the noun and its particle, directly before the verb. That placement is a common stumbling block.

The six counters to learn first

1. つ (general counter, up to ten)

The all-purpose counter for objects with no specific counter. It uses the native Japanese numbers rather than the Chinese-derived ones: ひとつ, ふたつ, みっつ, よっつ, いつつ, むっつ, ななつ, やっつ, ここのつ, とお.

If you forget the right counter, つ is the safe fallback for small quantities.

2. 人 (people)

  • 一人 (ひとり), 二人 (ふたり) are irregular and must be memorized.
  • From three on, it is regular: 三人 (さんにん), 四人 (よにん), 五人 (ごにん).

Note that 四人 is よにん, not よんにん.

3. 枚 (flat things)

Paper, tickets, plates, shirts, photos: 一枚, 二枚, 三枚. This one is regular and easy.

4. 本 (long, thin things)

Pencils, bottles, trees, umbrellas, and also train lines. This counter has the famous sound change, discussed below.

5. 冊 (bound volumes)

Books, notebooks, magazines: 一冊, 二冊, 三冊. Pronounced さつ, with 一冊 as いっさつ.

6. 匹 (small animals) and 台 (machines)

匹 covers cats, dogs, fish, and insects. 台 covers cars, computers, washing machines, and bicycles. Both have sound shifts similar to 本.

The sound changes that matter

Some counters change their initial sound after certain numbers. The pattern appears in 本, 匹, and also 杯 (cups) and 分 (minutes).

Number 本 匹
1 いっぽん いっぴき
2 にほん にひき
3 さんぼん さんびき
4 よんほん よんひき
6 ろっぽん ろっぴき
8 はっぽん はっぴき
10 じゅっぽん じゅっぴき

Do not try to memorize the whole table cell by cell. Instead, notice the rule: 1, 6, 8, and 10 often take a small っ and a p-sound; 3 often takes a b-sound; the rest are plain. Exceptions exist, which is why saying the forms aloud matters.

Asking "how many?"

  • 何人 (なんにん) — how many people
  • 何枚 (なんまい) — how many flat things
  • 何本 (なんぼん) — how many long things
  • いくつ — how many (general)

Notice how 何 sits in front of the counter, just like a number would.

Counters on the JLPT

At N5 and N4, counter questions usually appear in the vocabulary and grammar sections: you are given a sentence with a blank, and you pick the counter or reading that fits. They also appear in listening, where a number and a counter are spoken quickly and you need to understand quantity.

A few habits help a lot:

  • Match noun to shape. Ask yourself: is it flat, long, small, a machine, or a person?
  • Learn counters with a real object attached. "三本の傘" is easier to remember than "本 = long things".
  • Check for irregular readings. 一日 (ついたち), 二十日 (はつか), and 一人/二人 follow their own rules and are test favorites.

A simple study routine

  1. Learn the six counters above with one example sentence each.
  2. Say each number from 1 to 10 with 本 and 匹 out loud, once a day for a week.
  3. Add one new counter every few days as you meet it in your reading.

This incremental approach fits well with spaced review, covered in spaced repetition for JLPT vocabulary and kanji. Counters are exactly the kind of small, discrete facts that spaced repetition handles well.

For the broader N5 grammar and vocabulary scope, the JLPT N5 grammar checklist shows where counters fit among everything else you need. And if you want to see how all the pieces connect, the JLPT preparation guide is the place to start.

Try it in context

Counters are easier when you see them in questions rather than lists. JLPT Ready's Learn chapters link each grammar and vocabulary point to the practice questions that test it, and every question comes with an AI explanation. You can start free with N5 and practice counters in exam-style questions without a card.
