に vs で: Choosing the Right Particle for Places and Actions

N5N4

Early on, many learners treat に and で as two spellings of the same English word, "at" or "in." Then a test question asks them to fill in a blank, and both options look fine. They are not interchangeable, and there is a reliable way to choose.

The one-line test

Ask what the verb is doing.

  • If the verb describes existence or arrival at a place (being, going, putting, arriving), the place takes に.
  • If the verb describes an action happening in a place (eating, studying, buying, playing), the place takes で.

Compare:

  • 私は東京に住んでいます。— I live in Tokyo. (state of being there)
  • 私は東京で働いています。— I work in Tokyo. (an action done there)

に: where something exists or is headed

Existence: ある, いる

  • 机の上に本があります。— There is a book on the desk.
  • 公園に子供がいます。— There are children in the park.

Destination: 行く, 来る, 帰る, 入る

  • 学校に行きます。— I go to school.
  • 部屋に入ってください。— Please enter the room.

For destinations, へ is also possible: 学校へ行きます. The difference is small at this level.

Point of arrival or placement: 着く, 座る, 置く

  • 駅に着きました。— I arrived at the station.
  • 椅子に座ります。— I sit on the chair.
  • かばんを机の上に置いた。— I put my bag on the desk.

Time

に also marks specific points in time: 七時に起きます, 日曜日に会いましょう.

で: where an action takes place

  • 図書館で勉強します。— I study at the library.
  • レストランで昼ご飯を食べました。— I ate lunch at a restaurant.
  • 駅で友達に会いました。— I met a friend at the station.

Notice that 会う (to meet) takes で for the place, because meeting is an event that happens somewhere. The person you meet takes に.

で has a second job: means and tools

で also marks the tool, method, or material.

  • バスで行きます。— I go by bus.
  • 日本語で話してください。— Please speak in Japanese.
  • ペンで書きます。— I write with a pen.

If the noun before で is not a place, it is almost always a means. This second job explains why で shows up so often.

The tricky cases

Verbs that look like actions but take に

  • 住む (to live) takes に for the place, because it describes where you exist.
  • 泊まる (to stay overnight): ホテルに泊まる.
  • 勤める (to be employed at): 銀行に勤めている.

Verbs that take で even though you are "at" the place

  • 勉強する, 働く, 遊ぶ, 食べる, 買う all take で. They are all actions.

住んでいる vs 働いている

A good memory pair: live = に, work = で. Say it as a chant until it is automatic.

Quick practice

Fill in に or で:

  1. 毎朝、公園( )散歩します。
  2. 猫がソファ( )います。
  3. 友達の家( )泊まりました。
  4. 電車( )会社へ行きます。
  5. 図書館( )本を借りました。

Answers: 1 で, 2 に, 3 に, 4 で (means), 5 で.

How the JLPT tests this

Particle questions are common at N5 and N4. They usually give a short sentence with a blank and four particle options. The trick is to look at the verb first, not the noun. If you are unsure, ask the test above: existence or arrival (に), or an action in a place (で), or a tool/method (で).

When you miss one, put it in a mistake log with the verb and the reason. The verb is the clue you overlooked, and writing it down helps you spot it next time.
